Untitled English Fox Hunting Scene, Oil on Canvas, Mid-19th Century
-
Description
This antique British Sporting Art oil painting is untitled and unsigned. It captures the excitement of a fox hunt on the estate of an English country house. It depicts a grouping of five mounted huntsmen gesturing to each other as they have momentarily stopped in a field. In the distance is a village and church. One horse has turned its head to look at the artist and viewer. This charming painting shows the influence of the Barbizon School, with its soft brush-strokes, the hazy outlines, the soft atmospheric tones, and its landscape setting. It is a fine example of 19th century tonalism and Victorian Romanticism. The painting is in good condition as it has been professionally relined and restored and placed into a later vintage frame having a coral linen liner and gilt and molded frame. Some photographs show reflections of studio lights aimed at the painting and are not imperfections. The overall dimensions are listed below. The sight measurements are: 17"W x 15"H.
