Wheel and Shadow — Vintage Heliogravure by André Kertész

A quietly graphic heliogravure by André Kertész, capturing a wagon wheel from a steep overhead angle, its spokes echoed and elongated in the long shadow it casts across a sunlit pavement. The image is a hallmark of Kertész's formal vision — a photographer celebrated for finding abstract geometry, rhythm, and unexpected juxtaposition in the most ordinary corners of daily life. Working first in Budapest and then in Paris from 1925, Kertész pioneered a lyrical, chance-driven style built on shadows, reflections, and the interplay of natural light, later cited by Henri Cartier-Bresson as an antecedent to the "decisive moment." This composition, with its steep vantage point and interlocking diagonals, reflects the same purist eye seen in his best-known works of the period.

André Kertész (born Andor Kertész, 1894–1985) was a Hungarian-born photographer whose intuitive compositions and mastery of light made him one of the most influential figures in 20th-century photography. He received his first camera in 1912 and began photographing life around Budapest before moving to Paris in 1925, where he quickly established himself as a photojournalist and became a central figure in the city's émigré art scene, photographing artists including Piet Mondrian, Marc Chagall, and Constantin Brâncuși. In 1928, Kertész introduced fellow Hungarian Brassaï to photography, and his own poetic use of shadow and reflection would go on to shape the work of Henri Cartier-Bresson, Robert Capa, and Brassaï alike. Kertész emigrated to New York in 1936, where he worked for Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, and Condé Nast. Long under-recognized in the U.S., he was finally given a one-man show at the Museum of Modern Art in 1964, cementing his place as one of the century's defining photographers.
