Nude Study, Hand and Shoulder — Vintage Heliogravure by Pierre Jahan

A striking heliogravure by Pierre Jahan, presenting a tightly cropped nude study of a hand resting against a shoulder, rendered almost entirely in deep shadow with the body's contours picked out in a fine rim of light. The composition is characteristic of Jahan's nude studies of the 1940s, in which he treated the body with the same appetite for mystery and mood that defined his celebrated Surrealist-inflected work — most famously his wartime series La mort et les statues, made in collaboration with Jean Cocteau. A member of the influential Rectangle group alongside Emmanuel Sougez, Man Ray, and Henri Cartier-Bresson, and later of the Groupe des XV with Robert Doisneau and Willy Ronis, Jahan moved fluidly between reportage and Surrealism throughout his career, and this nude study — with its dramatic use of raking light and near-total darkness — reflects that same sensibility applied to the human form.

About the Artist:

Pierre Jahan (1909–2003) was a French photographer whose long, versatile career moved seamlessly between commercial work, wartime reportage, and Surrealist experimentation. Born in Amboise and largely self-taught, he moved to Paris in 1932–33, where an introduction to advertising illustrator Raymond Gid brought him his first professional commission, photographing workers repainting the Eiffel Tower. Encouraged by Emmanuel Sougez, then photography director of the magazine L'Illustration, Jahan joined the Rectangle group in 1936, exhibiting alongside Man Ray, Henri Cartier-Bresson, and Laure Albin Guillot. During the Occupation, Jahan produced his best-known body of work, La mort et les statues — photographs of Parisian bronze monuments awaiting the melting furnace, later published in 1946 with a text by Jean Cocteau, with whom he also collaborated on a 1947 book pairing his nude photographs with Cocteau's poem "Plain Chant." In 1949 he joined the Groupe des XV, alongside Robert Doisneau and Willy Ronis, to champion the recognition of photography as an art form. Jahan's work is held today in major institutional collections and continues to be exhibited internationally.
