Description
This large color screen-print and photo-screenprint by Julian Schnabel dates to circa 1992 and depicts his second wife, the Spanish actress Olatz López Garmendia. The composition centers on a strong circular motif layered within a collage-like field of printed imagery and gestural paint. Broad, sweeping brushstrokes in slate gray and black move across the sheet and are tempered by pale pink washes, warmer brown passages, and flashes of turquoise. Printed patterning and small rectilinear image fragments interrupt the pictorial surface and provide visual counterpoint to freer painterly gestures. Dense, tactile passages of hand-applied paint sit beside areas of delicate screen-printed texture and photographic transfer, producing a varied interplay of matte and saturated surfaces. Stenciled motifs, drips, and expressive marks animate the picture plane while the circular form organizes the composition. The work is presented within a simple gallery black frame and a white margin that isolates the image and clarifies its layered structure. The image’s interplay of printed and painted elements sustains an energetic rhythm across the sheet and rewards both close inspection and broader viewing. The piece is signed, dated and numbered by Julian Schnabel. Excellent vintage condition.
Julian Schnabel is an American artist, born in Brooklyn, New York, in 1951, whose practice is catalogued by major museums primarily as painting, sculpture, and works on paper, with later activity in film, architecture, and occasional furniture/design objects. He is closely associated with the late-1970s and 1980s revival of large-scale, expressive, materially assertive painting often described as American Neo-Expressionism. Museum accounts place him at the forefront of that moment, noting his use of monumental scale, vigorous brushwork, and figurative imagery after a period dominated by Minimal and Conceptual art.
