Icarus, Muscular Man Nude Bronze with Wings , Signed G. Colin and stamped 5888

$ 60,000
  • Description
    French sculptor Georges Colin depicts Icarus in an idealized pose, featuring a handsome, fit, semi-nude male with an acutely delineated musculature.
    Modeled in an academically correct fashion but in a romantic style, the subject faces the viewer in a symmetrically balanced composition, leaning forward with wings outstretched, poised for flight.
    The work is highly graphic, eye-catching in person, and commands the room, exuding enthusiasm for life.
    In Greek mythology, Icarus is the son of the master craftsman Daedalus. To escape imprisonment, Daedalus built wings made of feathers and wax for them both. Ignoring his father's warnings, Icarus flew too close to the sun, melting the wax, and plummeted into the sea to his death. In a more modern, artistic interpretation (as noted by scholars and poets such as W.H. Auden), Icarus is viewed as a symbol of human curiosity, the pursuit of the sublime, and the bravery of pursuing a dream, even at the risk of falling. La Conquêt de l'air (also known as Icare)
    Signed G. Colin and stamped 5888, and with foundry mark
    Bronze with a dark brown patina
    Signed at the base.
    Overall condition of the figure and base is very good, except for two detached parts where the left wing joins the arm. There is also a five-inch linear crack on the top of the shoulder. All issues are stable but would benefit from some conservation. The issues are apparent only under closer inspection.
    Best way to ship would be via an art shuttle. To major US cites most would cost from $1000 to $2000 depending on your location
