Description
Large modern Italian silver, diamond and malachite eagle model by Giaconi & Gioli
Italian, c. 1970
Eagle: Height 58cm, width 44cm, depth 22cm
Stand: Height 51cm, diameter 29cm
Overall: Height 109cm, width 44cm, depth 29cm
This striking decorative sculpture, dating to around 1970, was crafted by the Florentine silversmiths Giaconi & Gioli.
The centrepiece of the composition is a powerful eagle, poised atop a slender branch with its wings dramatically extended. Cast in silver, the bird appears mid-motion, either moments before taking flight or just landing, conveying energy and grace. The artists have skilfully captured the eagle’s natural features: from the intricate feathering and detailed claws to the sharply defined beak, all rendered with stunning precision. Select areas, including the talons, beak, and a delicate chain attached to one foot, are finished in silver-gilt, enhancing contrast and richness. The finely worked chain descends toward the plinth below, adding movement and continuity to the design.
A particularly luxurious feature is the eagle’s eyes, which are set with brilliant diamonds, offering a subtle yet striking sparkle that elevates the entire piece.
The eagle stands atop an architectural base, composed of richly patterned malachite and polished silver. The upper section is adorned with a band of scrolling decorative motifs, complemented by small malachite cabochons. A domed malachite sphere acts as a connecting element between the bird and the base, creating a harmonious flow in the composition.
Below, the plinth combines smooth silver surfaces with intricate embellishments, including fine twisted motifs and two bold malachite bands. The sculpture is anchored by a rounded malachite foot, resting on a circular plinth detailed with pierced silver mounts, adding an ornate finish.
The silver is fully marked, bearing the ‘925’ stamp for sterling quality, as well as the maker’s mark ‘441 FI’.
Impressively designed and masterfully executed, this silver and malachite sculpture is an outstanding decorative object. It will appeal to collectors of fine Italian silver, admirers of birds of prey, and those seeking a unique statement piece for refined interiors.
