Description
Large 19th century Orientalist bronze figure of a Moorish warrior by Henri-Honoré Plé
French, 19th Century
Height 111cm, width 54cm, depth 30cm
This striking late 19th-century bronze by Henri-Honoré Plé (1852–1922) presents a Moorish warrior in traditional dress, rendered with exquisite detail that captures the grandeur and drama of Orientalist sculpture at its peak. Trained in Paris under Théodore Gérault and Mathurin Moreau, Plé began exhibiting at the Salon in 1877 and quickly gained recognition for his romantic and historical bronzes. He received honourable mentions in 1879 and 1880, along with third- and second-class medals in 1880 and 1898, culminating in a bronze medal at the Exposition Universelle of 1900. His work encompasses allegorical figures, dynamic depictions of warriors and musicians, and Eastern-inspired subjects.
A fascinating example from his early series of Orientalist works, this sculpture displays extraordinary attention to detail: the intricate armour, flowing robes, chainmail headdress, and poised contrapposto stance convey both vitality and balance. The finely modelled textures of fabric and metal, together with the subtle gestures of the figure, imbue the piece with a sense of movement and realism. The warrior’s composed yet commanding expression exudes authority, while his sculpted physique and expertly cast sword affirm his strength and nobility. Cast in bronze, the material reinforces the warrior’s power; while its deep, rich patination catches and modulates the light beautifully.
The work is signed ‘Henri Plé’ at the base.
This sculpture exemplifies the refined modelling and finish that defined late 19th-century French Orientalist sculpture. Its technical mastery and romantic appeal make the perfect addition to any collection.
