Description
This male nude bronze is an exquisite example of dual sexuality. It is crafted in metal but becomes flesh. Sensuality emanates from every part of the statue as it swallows up the viewer.
Behold a magnificent, large, full-figure nude bronze sculpture depicting the god Bacchus—youthful and standing tall in an attitude of vital triumph and celebration. The subject is an amalgamation of the two sexes. The figure, characterized by stylized proportions and refined anatomy, raises his arms above his head to hold a bunch of grapes—a classic symbol of wine, fertility, and the joy of living. The bronze features a dark, uniform patina that enhances the forms, highlighting the tension of the torso, the structural elegance of the limbs, and the composition's harmonious verticality. This upward gesture lends dynamism and energy to the piece, evoking an ideal of classical beauty reinterpreted through a modern sensibility.

Jaume Otero i Camps was one of the leading Catalan sculptors of the 20th century. He studied in Barcelona, Paris, and Brussels, and spent time in various countries—including France, Belgium, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, and Italy—to hone his craft. His elegant Modernist works are heavily influenced by his international travels and, in particular, by French Art Deco. Otero was also influenced by Albert Bartholomé, with whom he worked in Paris from 1911 to 1914. His works often lean toward stylization, accentuating the femininity of his figures. Another characteristic of his work is its decorative quality—evident in the meticulous attention to detail, such as drapery and relief work—which aligns it with the Art Deco style.
Otero’s most famous work is the monumental fountain in Plaça de Catalunya in central Barcelona; he created several sculptures for the public art ensemble located in the square for the 1929 Barcelona International Exposition.
The Hébrard foundry was established by Adrien-Aurélien Hébrard in 1902. The workshop was located at 73 Avenue de Versailles in Paris, while the gallery was at 8 Rue Royale. Bronze enthusiasts prize Hébrard for the quality of the work and the subtlety of the patina. Hébrard collaborated with the greatest sculptors of the 19th century, including Edgar Degas, Joseph Bernard, Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux, and Jules Dalou. The workshop closed upon its founder's death in 1934.
