$ 9,500
  • Description
    American School, probably New England, ca. 1820-1830 Pair of Profile Portraits; Husband and Wife
    Unsigned
    Pastel on paper
    18 ¾” x 13 ¾” (frame), 15 ¼” x 10 ¼” (sight)
    Over-all in fine condition, what appears to be minor water staining is most like sap or acid markings from original backboards.
    Provenance: From the collection of Robert Horn.

    This striking pair of pastel portraits are reminiscent of the work of Benjamin Greenleaf, who painted profile portraits on glass in New England during the first quarter of the 19th century. Presumably husband and wife, she is wearing a blue dress with a white collar and gold pin and he is dressed in a formal black jacket and white shirt with hair swept forward. The accurate profile of the faces is further complimented by the bold color of the pastel.
