Art Deco, Amsterdam School, Room Divider attr. to Jaap Gidding, The Netherlands

$ 22,912
  • Description
    Painted wood becomes a stage for movement in this three-panel room divider, where bold composition and vivid form recall the decorative ambitions of the Amsterdam School and early Art Deco. A compelling object that balances function and ornament.

    Design
    This folding screen consists of three vertical panels framed in oak with fluted lower sections. Each surface is richly decorated with polychrome abstract motifs, hand-painted in tones of orange, ochre, rust red, green, and black. The symmetrical central panel suggests an anthropomorphic figure with stylised wings or flames, while the outer panels carry similarly swirling, rhythmic patterns.

    These flowing lines and colour treatments strongly echo the hand of Jaap Gidding (1887–1955), a celebrated Dutch designer known for his theatrical compositions and graphic sensibility. Gidding frequently worked across media, from carpets to cinema sets, and his pieces for public buildings like the Tuschinski Theatre exhibit the same exuberant formal language. The visual vocabulary of this screen, with its blend of organic movement and architectural symmetry, aligns closely with his known work.

    While this object likely began as a set of wall or cabinet panels, the current folding screen configuration appears to be a later but sensitive adaptation. The rear sides are finished in a matte green, with chalked numbers and initials that suggest earlier use or inventory marking.

    A powerful and decorative architectural element, this piece brings a sculptural quality into the room. It easily functions as a room divider or artwork, standing both as a utilitarian object and a painterly composition.

    Condition
    The screen is in good condition with some visible surface wear, including scuffs, minor fading, and age-related patina to the painted panels. The hinges operate smoothly and the wooden frame remains stable.
