Description
This stylish table lamp is a delightfully distinctive model, with unique details and material choices. Produced by AB E. Hansson & Co in Malmö, Sweden during the heyday of the mid-century modern movement, this rare model is just as stylish as it is elegant.
The structure is made of the ultimate material of the era’s lighting design, brass. Malmö was boasting in outstanding lighting manufacturers during the 1950s, but even in that repertoire this model stands out for its clever design. The most obvious one is the adjustable brass shade that dictates the overall impression. The large brass harp holds the lampshade that can be tilted to reveal the lightbulb. In the tilted position, the shade resembles an elegant hat sitting lightly on the harp. Furthermore, it is perforated around its top, with a pattern that becomes apparent when the light is on. The patterned part is sunk into the shade that further accentuates it. The lampshade is lacquered white on the inside giving it light elegance to balance the solid wood stem. Like the lamp socket, the thick base is also made of brass, and together they frame the beautifully patterned wood. Swedish lighting manufacturers were masters of creating designs with great texture variety as this table lamp shows: the pairing of brass and wood creates an interesting visual effect, where the traditional look of the organic material meets the modern look of brass.
Thanks to the great sense of proportions and decorative elements, this model is perfectly balanced visually. Apart from the aesthetics, the quality of this table lamp is also true to its mid-century heritage. This style’s recent popularity has much to do with the heart-warming light emitted from under the brass lampshade that makes cramped spaces feel cosy.
