Description
Hans-Agne Jakobsson was a celebrated Swedish designer whose work throughout the mid to late 20th century became known for its atmospheric light and organic forms. Trained as a cabinetmaker and later as an industrial designer, Jakobsson brought a masterful understanding of material and form to his pieces. His lighting designs for Markaryd were especially renowned for their ability to create warm, and inviting environment and to treat light as a sculptural element rather than a purely functional one.
The model “G-192” floor lamp embodies these ideas beautifully. It elegantly features a slender brass stem that rises from a round, weighted base, offering both stability and visual grounding. The brass arm extends horizontally from the stem in a geometric fashion, introducing a subtle rhythm and sense of movement to the silhouette. At its end sits an empire fabric shade that emits a soft, warm glow, perfectly diffusing the light to create an inviting environment. The exposed cord runs along the stem in a natural, relaxed way, making this piece feel even more approachable. The lamp’s minimal yet expressive composition, utilising brass, a metal which became synonymous with 20th century lighting design, highlights Jakobsson’s talent for transforming simple geometric lines into something unique and engaging. Its adjustable arm and shade make it versatile as a reading light or accent lamp, adaptable to various interior needs.
Jakobsson designs’ unique quality lies in effortlessly infusing Scandinavian simplicity with a touch of innovation, resulting in pieces like this that transcend time. As both a sculptural object and a functional light source, this floor lamp showcases the enduring legacy of Hans-Agne Jakobsson and the works created at Markaryd.
