Adjustable Two-Armed Wood and Brass Floor Lamp, Europe ca 1940s

The 1940s saw the transition from late Art Deco toward early European modernism during, when the stronger geometry of interwar design was increasingly combined with simpler structures and a more restrained use of materials. In the case of this lamp, its mixture of warm wood, brass and textile retains the material richness associated with earlier decorative interiors, while the thin construction and adjustable lighting elements point toward the more functional language that became prominent in postwar European design.

A low circular wooden base supports the slender brass rod, which transitions into a long reddish-brown wooden stem. The shaft remains straight and uninterrupted for most of its height, emphasising the verticality of the lamp before the composition opens outward at the top. A brass section divides into two curved arms, each describing an arc. The arrangement gives the lamp a distinctive branching silhouette while keeping the overall structure remarkably spare. The arms allow the shades to be adjusted independently, so their openings can face outward, or toward one same spot for additional light. The tapered fabric shades widen slightly toward the openings, echoing the outward movement of the brass arms. Their soft textile surfaces contrast with the polished metal and dark wood, while their relatively small scale leaves the structure in focus. Seen as a whole, the wood provides visual weight through the shaft and base, while the finer brass elements make the upper structure appear lighter as it separates into the two lights to define the look.

The paired arms are what give the lamp its particular identity. The piece is fundamentally functional, at the same time having enough character to stand on its own, making it a distinctive example of European lighting from the 1940s.

Condition:
In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The lamp has recently been reconditioned and rewired. The shades were custom made by our in-house atelier. Due to the age and nature of the materials, the item has minor marks, scratches, and discolouration. The lamp is compatible with an E26 / E27 (standard) fitting. All lighting can be converted for US usage.
