Description
This is a very rare and very cool sculptural mid-century wall lamp by Norwegian lighting maker ASTRA, with elegantly curved brass arms and contrasting black isolit details (the Swedish version of Bakelite). The sweeping, leaf-like forms give this compact fixture a lovely sense of movement, and the detailing of the metalwork is very fine. A characterful piece of Norwegian lighting with plenty of sculptural presence.
The lamp retains is in very good vintage condition, the original shades are missing (which were most likely made of glass) but this can be used with retro squirrel cage bulbs, or a small lampshade.
Dimensions: 16" H × 6" W × 4" D.
ASTRA was a Norwegian lighting manufacturer established in Oslo in 1940 and active until 1973. The company produced a varied range of mid-century lighting, its surviving designs reflect the expressive side of Scandinavian modernism, combining functional lighting with organic lines and an emphasis on the silhouette of the fixture itself. Today, ASTRA's vintage lamps are rare & found through specialist Scandinavian design dealers and collectors (like me!). -
