Description
An exquisite set of three Murano glass and nickel-plated brass wall lights, Barovier & Toso Manufacture, Murano, 1940s
This elegant group of three wall lights represents the finest expression of Murano glass artistry, crafted in the 1940s by the renowned Barovier & Toso workshop on the Venetian island of Murano. For centuries, Murano glass has been celebrated and exported worldwide for its unique beauty and craftsmanship. Its luminous quality—defined by transparency, vibrant colour, and delicate texture—makes it a natural complement to lighting design.
When the excellence of Murano glass meets the very concept of light, the result is invariably a lighting fixture of remarkable prestige. This has been true since long before electricity became widespread, when fragile chandeliers and torchères travelled across Europe packed in straw-lined wooden crates to adorn the most refined interiors.
In the 20th century, with the advent of electric lighting, Murano glass continued to enchant. Pioneering new forms and aesthetics while remaining faithful to centuries-old techniques, makers such as Barovier & Toso embraced evolving tastes and styles. The Barovier tradition, in fact, boasts over 600 years of history.
Each of the three wall lights in this set features a structured, squared nickel-plated brass mount with subtle Art Deco overtones. The delicate shade, made from handblown Murano glass using time-honoured techniques, has an organic, undulating form that beautifully enhances the material’s natural brilliance once illuminated.
