Description
Bertil Brisborg was one of the defining figures of Swedish lighting design during the mid-20th century. As the leading designer for Nordiska Kompaniet (NK) during the 1940s and 1950s, he developed lighting that combined Scandinavian restraint with a more sculptural and decorative sensibility. Brisborg frequently experimented with the relationship between brass and natural materials, producing lamps that balanced precision with warmth.
Model “32755” reflects this approach through its elegant combination of brass and elm wood. The lamp is built around a slender tapered wooden stem that rises from a circular brass base, creating a strong vertical emphasis without appearing heavy. The elm introduces warmth and visible grain variation, softening the more polished and reflective brass elements. This contrast between materials is central to the lamp’s character. Rather than competing visually, the wood and metal complement one another through their differing textures and finishes. The wide conical shade complements the slender stem below. Its pale fabric surface diffuses the light evenly while maintaining the restrained appearance typical of Scandinavian lighting from the period. Brass details at the top and bottom of the stem create subtle transitions between all the elements and give the structure greater visual precision.
Bertil Brisborg’s work helped shape the identity of Swedish modern lighting through models like this “32755” table lamp. The lamp functions equally well as atmospheric lighting and as a sculptural object, where the interplay of textures and shapes becomes the defining visual feature.
