Ceiling Lamp by Carl Fagerlund in Brass & Glass, 1960s

  • Description
This rare ceiling lamp, designed by Carl Fagerlund and produced by Orrefors in Sweden during the 1960s, is a refined example of mid-century Scandinavian lighting design. It exemplifies Fagerlund’s characteristic approach, blending sculptural form, fine materials, and luminous texture to create lighting that is both functional and decorative.

The lamp’s structure draws inspiration from organic forms, with a floral motif that lends it a soft, radiant presence. The shade is composed of individually cast glass elements arranged in a symmetrical, radial pattern that evokes the form of an open flower. Each “petal” is made of thick, clear glass with a delicately ribbed surface, designed to catch and refract light. When illuminated, the textured glass disperses the light evenly, casting a warm, ambient glow while creating subtle highlights and shadow play—an effect that underscores the piece’s sculptural quality.

The central structure and fittings are executed in solid brass, including the finial, canopy, and mounting hardware. The brass has developed a warm patina over time, which adds depth and historical character to the piece without compromising its elegance. A fluted ceiling mount transitions into a slender brass stem that supports the glass shade, maintaining a graceful and cohesive vertical line. The interplay between the luminous glass and the aged brass results in a balanced contrast of materials—one light and crystalline, the other rich and earthy.

Measuring 47 cm in diameter and 58 cm in height (approximately 18.5 x 22.8 inches), the lamp is moderately scaled, making it well-suited for use in dining rooms, entryways, or living spaces where its detailed craftsmanship and decorative form can be appreciated from below and across the room.

Carl Fagerlund, a Swedish designer and glass artist, is best known for his collaborations with Orrefors, where he produced a range of lighting and decorative glass that combined technical precision with organic elegance. His designs from the 1950s and 1960s often featured bold, nature-inspired forms rendered in richly textured glass and finely finished metals, contributing significantly to the development of postwar Scandinavian lighting aesthetics.

Orrefors, founded in 1898, was one of Sweden’s most respected glassworks and became internationally renowned for its contributions to modern design. The partnership with Fagerlund resulted in some of the company’s most enduring and collectible lighting designs, which continue to be admired for their clarity, craftsmanship, and timeless elegance.

This lamp remains in very good vintage condition, with only minor signs of wear consistent with its age. The glass components are free from cracks or major blemishes, and the brass elements retain their original integrity and finish. Its condition, coupled with its distinguished provenance and aesthetic appeal, makes it a collectible and highly decorative example of mid-century Swedish design.
