Description
This very rare ceiling lamp, designed by Carl Fagerlund and produced by Orrefors in Sweden during the 1960s, is a refined and sculptural example of mid-century Scandinavian lighting design. Fagerlund’s signature approach—uniting glass artistry with functional illumination—is fully realized in this piece, which exemplifies the interplay of light, form, and texture that defined his collaborations with Orrefors.
The lamp features a wide, bowl-shaped shade crafted from thick, clear glass. The glass is richly textured with an intricate organic pattern resembling rippling water or crystalline growth. This surface treatment is not merely decorative—it actively participates in the diffusion of light, breaking and softening the output into a gentle, ambient glow. The effect is atmospheric, casting delicate reflections and shadows across the surrounding space while avoiding harsh glare. The scalloped edge of the shade adds a tactile, undulating form that enhances its sculptural character and visual rhythm.
Suspended from a brass canopy, the lamp balances the transparency of the glass with the warm metallic finish of its fittings. The brass has developed a natural patina over time, which adds depth and historical authenticity to the piece without compromising its refined elegance. The combination of gleaming and textured surfaces elevates the lamp from a mere lighting fixture to an object of visual and material sophistication.
Carl Fagerlund (1915–2011), a Swedish lighting designer trained as a glass artist, is celebrated for his ability to transform utilitarian lighting into expressions of artistry. His long-standing partnership with Orrefors—one of Sweden’s foremost glass manufacturers—produced a body of work that is now highly regarded among collectors and design connoisseurs. Fagerlund’s lamps are often recognized for their precise craftsmanship and for the way they elevate the material properties of glass to create luminous, spatial experiences.
Orrefors, founded in 1898, is renowned for its artisanal glassmaking and innovative designs. The firm has played a central role in the history of Swedish applied arts, particularly during the mid-20th century when it collaborated with some of the country’s most influential designers. The lamp’s execution reflects Orrefors’ technical mastery, where each component—from the mold-blown glass to the brass hardware—embodies precision and quality.
This example is in excellent vintage condition. The glass shade is pristine, with no visible chips or cracks, and retains its clarity and textural definition. The brass components show a desirable patina, consistent with age, while remaining fully functional and structurally sound.
