Description
Carl-Harry Stålhane (1920-1990) is one of the most renowned representatives of Swedish ceramic design, and is well-known as one of the artistic leaders for Designhuset in the mid-20th century. His name is synonymous with high ceramic quality, magnificent creative design and brilliant craftsmanship - as is his collaborator, Kent Eriksson. This table lamp is an exceptional example of their talent.
The overall design of this lamp has a clear focus on the ceramic body. The unique base features a beautiful brown glaze, a clear artistic touch by Stålhane and Eriksson. The circular fabric shade also provides the perfect pairing with the round body. With a combination of interesting material choices and design, this lamp has an innovative, modern look that is just as much a work of art as it is a utilitarian piece. The overall aesthetic is essentially Nordic modern, thanks to the combination of interesting material choices and a design that is inspired by cosy shapes. This table lamp has a particularly lovely glaze, with a deep tone full of colour nuances. The lampshade’s shape contributes to this look as well; the fabric of the shade is seemingly textural, with an elegant and stylish look that stands out even more when the lamp is lit. The designers managed to make this lamp anything but typical, showcasing both their craftsmanship and design skill. The simplicity of the design allows the lamp to seamlessly integrate into various decor styles while still commanding attention. Beyond the aesthetic appeal, it also offers practical benefits, serving as a focal point that draws the eye and anchors the room's visual narrative.
It is known that in 1960, Stålhane reached something of a peak with an exhibition at Galerie Blanche in Stockholm. The exhibition showed robustly dark wares that were hailed as the new ceramics of the sixties, a "rebellion against perfectionism". These stoneware pieces, using local clay, were to characterize Carl-Harry’s work in the sixties, and this table lamp is an example of this revolutionary movement.
