Description
A refined dialogue between light and glass defines this pendant lamp by Carlo Nason for Mazzega, created in the early 1970s. The composition, model LS 199, demonstrates Nason’s sensitivity to form, texture, and transparency.
Design
This suspended light fitting consists of several overlapping Murano glass panels arranged in a rhythmic vertical cluster. Each plate is individually crafted, slightly irregular in contour and embedded with delicate surface textures; reminiscent of ice or crumpled silk. When illuminated, the glass diffuses the light evenly, casting warm reflections and soft shadows. Held together by a chromed metal rod and fixings, the translucent elements appear to float, creating a sculptural yet weightless effect.
Nason, born into a family of glassmakers in Murano, brought a new aesthetic language to Venetian lighting design. His work for Mazzega in the 1960s and 70s moved away from ornate traditions toward simpler, more architectural expressions. The LS 199 exemplifies this shift; its design is both measured and expressive, revealing the hand of the artisan and the mind of a modernist.
This lamp is also featured in the book Carlo Nason 'Handle with Care'.
Condition
The lamp is in good vintage condition. The chrome ceiling cap shows signs of age-related oxidation. All glass elements are intact and undamaged, with slight wear consistent with age. -
