Description
A poetic study in light and texture, this rare set of six LP 257 wall appliques by Carlo Nason embodies the experimental spirit of Italian lighting design in the 1970s. Crafted by Mazzega, a Murano-based glassworks known for its collaborations with boundary-pushing designers, these wall-mounted fixtures radiate a tactile brilliance.
Design
Each applique features a sculptural arrangement of two overlapping layers of hand-moulded glass; one larger horizonal layer and a smaller vertical layer. Although, the layers can also be switched vertically and horizontally.
Gently curved panels capture and refract the light, creating a play of shadow and luminosity across the wall. The unique form of each glass piece; at once square and fluid, reflects Nason’s preference for geometric rhythm softened by organic irregularity. While deceptively simple in silhouette, the depth of surface and materiality reveals itself under illumination. These lamps were made in different color schemes, where these lamps feature the 'tabacco-colored' band.
Light sources sit centrally, allowing the undulating forms to glow from within. The edges, sometimes sharp, sometimes slightly warped, testify to the artisanal process involved in their creation. Mounted on minimal chromed fixtures, the glass remains the visual and functional focus of the design.
Condition
This set is in very good original condition. Minor imperfections are present in the glass, consistent with hand production and age. The metal parts show light patina. All components are functional.
These wall lights also feature in the Mazzega catalogue #9 on page 188 and 189. -
