1930s European Hand-Painted Frosted Glass Lamp with Pierced Matching Shade

$ 4,600
  • Description
    A sophisticated pre-war European mixed-media table lamp, dating to the 1930s. Exhibiting the refined craftsmanship of an elite French or Italian decorative arts studio from the interwar period, the lamp masterfully bridges the geometric rigor of the Art Deco movement with elegant Neo-Classical proportions. The piece is highly reminiscent of the luxurious lighting designs produced by prestigious French ateliers like Maison Baguès and Maison Ramsay, which specialized in pairing severe, architectural bases with delicate, masterfully worked glass components. The piece is attributed to the studio based on the distinct European pre-war metric geometry, the custom cast-bronze collar socket assembly, and the hand-executed raised gold slip-trailing techniques.

    The lamp features a hand-blown, heavy-walled frosted satin glass urn body. The botanical composition is executed using an intricate raised-paste technique; the gold foliage is built up with a dimensional, wire-like slip-trailed armature that is subsequently gilded, creating an elegant sculptural relief over the acid-etched glass column. The white and black floral elements are hand-applied over this ground with deliberate, visible brushstrokes and dimensional enamel jeweling that provide exceptional graphic depth.

    The glass urn is supported by a classical Neo-Classical rope-twist gilt metal collar, resting on a substantial, stepped geometric wooden base finished in a matte black lacquer. This architectural, truncated pyramidal plinth reflects the avant-garde, flat-planed geometric proportions defining Art Deco high modernism during the 1930s. The lamp is fitted with an elongated harp that elegantly elevates the shade, fully exposing the sculpted neck of the glass urn and its gilded collar. Adding immensely to the rarity, completeness, and historical value of this piece is its original matching black drum shade. The shade features an intricate, custom die-cut pierced perforation pattern that precisely replicates the silhouette of the hand-painted foliage below. When illuminated, the light filters through these negative spaces, creating a dramatic interplay of shadow and light that transforms the piece into a cohesive, theatrical lighting sculpture intended for sophisticated pre-war modernist interiors.
