Description
This stylish table lamp is a delightfully distinctive model, with immediately recognizable details and material choices. According to the Museum of Malmö, Einar Bäckström founded his workshop in 1918 for the manufacture of lighting and ornaments, and as the museum notes, “all patterns were composed by Mr. Bäckström himself”.
Made in Bäckström's workshop in Malmö, this “5014” lamp has an unmistakable Swedish mid-century look. From the clean lines and the brass - the ultimate material for mid-century lighting designs - structure to the leather wrapped shaft, this model is timeless. Compared to “Model 5013”, this lamp has a more classic, robust build with a thicker base and straighter shade. Swedish lighting manufacturers were masters of creating designs with great texture variety as this table lamp shows: the pairing of brass and leather creates an interesting visual effect, where the traditional look of the organic material meets the modern look of brass. The twisted dark brown leather wraps around the stem from the very base of the lamp with its textured look contrasting beautifully against the smooth brass. The lamp is grounded by the round base, which resembles the shape of the shade. Thanks to Bäckström’s masterful sense of proportions, this model is perfectly balanced visually. Apart from the aesthetics, the quality of this table lamp is also true to its mid-century heritage. This style’s recent popularity has much to do with the heart-warming light emitted from under the brass lampshade that makes cramped spaces feel cosy. It also lights the brass up, making it seem as if it glowed from within.
While very little is known about Einar Bäckström, but even with scarce information available his lighting designs speak for themselves. With its classic look and materials paired with the famed Swedish design and quality, this “5014” table lamp is perfect to bring visual interest and style into any interior.
