Pair of "3073" Glazed Stoneware Table Lamps by Einar Johansen, Denmark ca 1950s

‎‎‎‎‎This handmade table lamp pair was designed by the brilliant Danish artist, Einar Johansen, and produced by Søholm Stentøj (Søholm stoneware). The manufactory was one of the oldest and most revered names in Danish ceramics. It was founded in Rønne on the Baltic island of Bornholm in 1835, and produced ceramics until the factory closed in 1996.

Like many of his contemporaries, Johansen originally trained as a painter at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen, and that truly shows in his ceramic work. This pair of model “3073” lamps have beautiful round ceramic bodies featuring a glaze in shades of brown and greyish black, and a clear artistic touch. The earthy tones reinforce the natural character of the material, allowing the glaze to complement the texture rather than dominate it. Above, the fabric shades introduce a contrasting geometrical element, visually. Their form diffuses the light evenly, producing a warm glow that complements the depth of the ceramic bases. The relationship between these elements is balanced and deliberate, with the shades acting as calm counterpoints to the more expressive bases.

What gives the model “3073” its presence is the way it feels anchored without appearing heavy. The geometry is simple, yet the surface carries enough detail to hold attention. Whether placed on a side table or console, the material qualities can be appreciated without needing excess ornament to stand out.

Condition:
In good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. The table lamps have recently been reconditioned and rewired. The shades are a later replacement. Due to the age and nature of the stoneware, the lamps may have marks and discolouration. These lamps are compatible with an E26 / E27 (standard) fitting. All lighting can be converted for US usage.
