Description
During the 1960s, Danish ceramicists and lighting designers increasingly explored the relationship between sculpture and functionality. Manufacturers such as Søholm, one of Denmark’s most recognised ceramic company of the period, became known for collaborating with designers who explored expressive glazing techniques while maintaining the balance between the organic character of natural materials, craftsmanship and practicality.
This table lamp by Einar Johansen for Søholm embodies that philosophy through its sculptural stoneware base and complex composition. The body is defined by a vertically segmented form, where deep blue glazed sections are framed within darker ceramic edges, creating rhythm and depth across the surface. The elongated silhouette tapers gently upward, giving the lamp an elegant sense of proportion despite the solidity of the stoneware. The glaze itself becomes central to the design, with tonal variation and reflective surfaces emphasizing the handcrafted quality of the piece. Above, the broad conical shade introduces a contrast to the curved ceramic body below. Its off-white fabric diffuses the light evenly, creating a warm ambient glow that complements the richness of the glaze.
The ceramic body feels expressive and architectural, and as a result, the lamp functions not only as a source of light, but also as a carefully composed decorative object that reflects the timeless character of Danish design during the 1960s.
