Description
The Lorian table lamp, designed by Erik Bratsberg and produced in Sweden in 2021, is a contemporary design object that masterfully balances sculptural expression with material sophistication. As part of a limited edition of only 10 pieces, the lamp stands as both a lighting fixture and a collectible work of functional art—emphasizing exclusivity, craftsmanship, and a refined interplay of contrasting textures.
The base of the Lorian lamp is crafted from Emperador marble, a luxurious stone known for its deep brown hue and intricate veining. This richly patterned material offers both visual weight and a grounding presence, anchoring the design with natural elegance. The marble’s highly polished finish enhances its complexity, making each lamp subtly unique through the inherent variation in the stone’s surface.
In contrast to the solidity of the base, the upper portion of the lamp features a curved brass screen paired with a delicate textile made of natural fiber straw. The brass introduces a warm, industrial sheen, while the straw textile provides an organic tactility—together creating a compelling juxtaposition of hard and soft, refined and raw. The way the materials are layered and framed evokes a quiet theatricality, as the light diffuses through the straw and reflects off the brass, producing a soft, ambient glow with nuanced shadows and highlights.
The overall form of the lamp is sculptural and modernist, with subtle asymmetries and deliberate proportions that invite tactile and visual engagement. Bratsberg’s holistic design approach is clearly evident: every element is carefully considered, and the combination of materials speaks to a design ethos that values both aesthetic clarity and material storytelling.
Erik Bratsberg (b. 1984) is a multidisciplinary designer whose work spans objects, interiors, and spatial installations. His approach is rooted in a deep exploration of material identity and emotional resonance. Since establishing his independent practice in 2019, Bratsberg has become a prominent voice in contemporary Scandinavian design. His contributions to Stockholm’s Persona restaurant interior and his participation in high-profile exhibitions—such as New Narratives during the 2023 Stockholm Furniture Fair and New Contemporary at the 2022 Stockholm Creative Edition—have earned him critical recognition and expanded his international reach.
The Lorian table lamp made its public debut at New Contemporary, where it was praised for its sculptural restraint, rich materiality, and its ability to bridge the boundaries between design and art. As a lighting object, it transcends the purely functional, becoming a statement piece that elevates and defines the space it inhabits.
In excellent condition and with a strict production limit, Lorian exemplifies collectible contemporary design—rooted in tradition, yet entirely modern in expression. It is an ideal acquisition for discerning collectors and interiors that value unique, narrative-driven objects with enduring visual and material appeal.
