Description
Erik Tidstrand, the Swedish designer of the early 20th century balanced refined craftsmanship with a clear approach to form. Working closely with Nordiska Kompaniet during the 1920s and 1930s, Tidstrand contributed to a distinctly Scandinavian modern design that favored warmth, proportion, and functionality. His lighting designs from this period reflect a time where elegance was taking the form of simple silhouettes without losing a sense of refinement.
Model “29517” exemplifies this sensibility through its carefully considered form and restrained detailing. This table lamp features a gently tapered wooden stem that introduces a natural softness to the look, contrasted by a discreet, dome-like brass base that anchors the form visually and physically. The shade sits neatly on the stem, maintaining a practical quality while honouring aesthetics. Every element feels intentional, from the smooth transition between materials to the subtle curves that prevents the design from becoming rigid. When illuminated, the lamp produces a warm, even light that complements the wood and brass, reinforcing the sense of calm ambiance that defined Scandinavian interiors of the 1930s. The overall construction speaks to the great craftsmanship associated with Nordiska Kompaniet, combining fine materials with precise execution.
This table lamp’s understated elegance allows it to integrate seamlessly into a range of settings, from historically informed Scandinavian spaces to more contemporary environments that value timeless design. As a product of Erik Tidstrand’s work for Nordiska Kompaniet, the lamp carries both aesthetic and historical significance.
