Description
This rare and impressively scaled ceiling lamp, designed and produced by Fog & Mørup in Denmark during the 1940s, exemplifies the refined elegance and artisanal integrity of early Scandinavian modernist lighting. Known for their innovative and high-quality designs, Fog & Mørup emerged as one of Denmark’s leading lighting manufacturers in the 20th century. This piece is a particularly notable example of their earlier production, blending classical form with the emerging sensibilities of modernist functionalism.
The lamp is constructed around a central cylindrical hub from which a series of gracefully curved brass arms radiate outward. Each arm terminates in an opaline glass globe, contributing to the lamp’s balanced, radial composition. This configuration not only creates a visually striking chandelier-like silhouette but also ensures an even, ambient light distribution. The opaline glass globes emit a soft, diffused glow, enhancing the lamp’s atmospheric quality and softening the overall illumination—a key aspect of mid-century Scandinavian design, where glare-free and warm light were essential design goals.
The brass structure has developed a rich, natural patina over the decades, lending the piece depth and a sense of history. The finish highlights the hand-finished nature of the metalwork and enhances the sculptural presence of the lamp. The visual contrast between the warm, aged brass and the cool, milky surface of the glass globes heightens the lamp’s sophisticated aesthetic.
With grand dimensions—measuring 120 cm in diameter and 130 cm in height (47.2 x 51.2 inches)—this lamp is best suited to large spaces, such as open-plan living rooms, grand entryways, or architectural public interiors. Its scale and form provide not just illumination but a sculptural centerpiece capable of anchoring an entire spatial composition.
Despite its age, the lamp remains in very good vintage condition, with minor surface wear consistent with age and careful use. The original opaline glass shades are intact, and the structural integrity of the brass framework is preserved, offering both beauty and function.
