Pair Vintage Gerald Thurston for Lightolier Brass & Lucite Lamps, Circa 1950s

$ 2,800
  • Description
    This exceptional matched pair of mid-century modern table lamps perfectly exemplifies the uncompromising structural minimalism and innovative material blending that defined post-war American lighting engineering. Attributed to the celebrated industrial designer Gerald Thurston for the prestigious Lightolier Company, each lamp features a visually weightless central column composed of two slender, solid-brass support posts flanking a central, suspended pull switch mechanism. The lighting element consists of a three-bulb cluster arranged symmetrically over an integrated, white perforated metal diffuser pan which elegantly filters downward light. Suspended directly from the center socket base by a beaded ball-chain is a lucite cylindrical pull baton capped in brass. When pulled down to cycle the lamps through their sequential lighting stages, the mechanism offers clean mechanical movement before returning to its resting position. The modern structures anchor securely to heavy, square brass base plates resting on low-profile disc feet, and are crowned by ivory lacquered drum shades completed by brass top ring caps and ball finials.

    Dating precisely to the 1950s, this pair represents Lightolier's peak mid-century modern portfolio, during which Gerald Thurston revolutionized residential lighting by treating fixtures as precision architectural instruments. Moving away from standard fabric shades, Thurston engineered these drum diffusers to completely eliminate bulb glare. The brilliant incorporation of a three-bulb cluster operated by a floating, central lucite baton allowed the design to maintain an unbroken, purely minimalist geometric profile with no visible external knobs or dangling side cords. The combination of space-age clear lucite, industrial-gauge brass posts, and clean geometric lines gives these lamps an iconic presence. Retaining their original multi-stage hardware and original lacquer, this highly complete matched pair represents an investment-grade acquisition for advanced mid-century modern design collector

    Advanced collectors of Thurston's work for Lightolier will recognize this pair as the highly refined, variation of his classic mechanical pull system.
