Description
Hans Bergström was one of the leading figures of Swedish lighting design during the mid-20th century. Through his work for ASEA and Ateljé Lyktan, Bergström developed lighting that balanced Scandinavian restraint with a refined sense of proportion and material contrast. His work is often characterised by slender silhouettes, careful detailing, and a strong understanding of how lighting interacts with an interior.
Many of Bergström’s lamps combined brass with wood or textiles, creating compositions that felt warm rather than purely industrial. Model “741140-1” reflects this approach through its simple vertical composition and elegant use of materials. The lamp rises from a circular brass base into a long, slightly tapering wooden stem whose fluted surface introduces subtle rhythm and texture along the height of the piece. The narrow body gives the lamp a light appearance, while the warm wood softens the reflective quality of the brass elements above and below. Near the top, a slim brass fitting creates the transition into the broad shade. What makes the shade stand out is on one side its size and on the other its undulating form, adding a subtle and elegant detail to the sleek, balanced and timeless model.
From the fluted wooden shaft to the brass detailing and broad textile shade, every element works together to create a composition that feels calm and distinctly Scandinavian in character. Relying on classic materials and techniques, the designer managed to create a piece to last for generations to come.
