Description
Jette Hellerøe belongs to the generation of Danish ceramicists who expanded the role of studio pottery during the 1960s and 1970s, bringing hand-thrown stoneware into functional objects for the home. She produced numerous designs for Axella, a Danish workshop founded in the 1970s. Her work for the manufacturer is particularly associated with lamps and other stoneware forms whose surfaces became an important part of their design.
Model “631,” produced during the 1970s, is an Axella design executed in stoneware with a stand-out organic relief decoration. The lamp has a rounded stoneware body that narrows sharply as it transitions into a tall, slender neck. Across the lower section, Hellerøe worked the surface with large flowing carvings that resemble leaves, spirals and curling botanical forms. Recessed outlines separate the motifs while allowing a rich blue glaze to lay within the ridges. The tonal contrast carries on to the neck, which is left unglazed, exposing the chamotte clay, giving the surface an earthy depth and making the relief particularly pronounced. Above, the tall fabric shade expands upwards and outward adding visual substance to the piece. Its simple profile balances the weight of the ceramic base, while the warm diffused light brings out the irregularities of the glaze and the shadows within the relief.
The model “631” has the presence of a ceramic artwork while remaining a functional source of ambient light. The lamp holds enough character to shine on its own on a console, side table or bedside cabinet, as a particularly expressive example of Hellerøe’s work for Axella and of the tactile character associated with Danish ceramics of the 1970s.
