Model "643" Stoneware Table Lamp by Jelle Hellerøe for Axella, Denmark 1970s

$ 4,025
  • Description
    Jette Hellerøe belongs to the generation of Danish ceramicists who transformed hand-thrown stoneware into functional objects for the home during the latter half of the 20th century. She produced numerous designs for Axella, a Danish workshop active during the period, and her work for the manufacturer is particularly associated with ceramic lamps like this one.

    Model “643” is an Axella design from the 1970s. The lamp has a compact cylindrical body that draws inward before sloping into a narrow neck. Its surface is divided into two distinct looks. The lower half is decorated with geometric motifs separated into vertical bands, each panel individually carved to create a rhythmic pattern of abstract forms. The pattern has a strong graphic quality through the different tones of the glaze, from off-white to dark blues. A fine rust colored line defines the shoulder, separating the decoration below from the quieter upper section. The neck is covered in a muted glaze, with speckled brown and grey tones. Above, a wide cylindrical fabric shade complements the broad base and introduces a much softer surface. Its natural texture and geometric edges give the light a warm, diffused character, while still living the abstract ceramic decoration as the main point of attention. Model “643” has the presence of a small ceramic artwork while remaining an intimate source of ambient light.

    Jette Hellerøe’s designs represent the bulk of Axella’s pieces, and lamps like this one demonstrate why her career was so successful. From the carefully modelled ceramic body, tactile relief decoration, and balanced proportions, the lamp is a perfect example of the Scandinavian ceramic tradition.
