Description
#N-0131C: Large and Impressive Bohemian Cut and Frosted Glass Chandelier
Bohemian, 20th century
Height 235cm, diameter 100cm
This magnificent chandelier celebrates the artistry of Bohemian glassmaking, echoing the elegance of grand 19th-century design on an exceptional scale. Rising over two metres in height, it impresses not only with its towering proportions but also with the intricacy of its cutting and the superb quality of its finish. It was made in Bohemia by the renowned firm of Preciosa, one of the most distinguished names in Central European crystal.
At its centre is a tall column of stacked, decorative glass segments, finely cut with geometric and hobnail patterns and hung throughout with cascading strands of faceted beads. These graduated tiers rise to a slender crown, from which beaded chains sweep outward and down to the principal tier below, lending the whole a soaring, tapering silhouette.
The largest tier is fitted with scrolling arms, each supporting a clear glass bobeche trimmed with faceted drops and a tall cut-glass candle. Above each light sits an etched hurricane shade with a scalloped frosted rim, delicately engraved with a diamond lattice and a monogram, adding a further layer of refinement. Between the shades, long frosted glass rods and pointed prisms hang in dense, skirt-like rows, catching and diffusing the light to dazzling effect.
Beneath the main tier, further rows of frosted rods, faceted beads and swagged garlands descend in graceful, concentric arcs to a pointed finial, completing the composition with balance and harmony.
Rich in detail and imposing in scale, this chandelier is a true statement piece, an exceptional focal point for a grand hall, stairwell or reception room that calls for dramatic beauty and the finest craftsmanship.
This chandelier and the matching pair of candelabra (https://www.mayfairgallery.com/very-large-pair-bohemian-cut-frosted-glass-candelabra) were conceived as a suite, and together they would make a spectacular ensemble for a grand hall, ballroom or stairwell — the towering central light echoed by the two flanking torchères to create a wonderfully theatrical, unified display.
