Description
Large Antique Late 19th Century French Cut Glass and Bronze Chandelier
French, c. 1880
Dimensions: Height 250cm, diameter 200cm
Consisting of 27 lights, this splendid chandelier is crafted from cut glass, ormolu and patinated bronze, designed in the opulent Belle Époque style of the late 19th century.
Each of the 27 engraved glass lights are formed as hurricane shades, every one held up by a scrolled glass branch. The lights feature an ormolu rim, from which hangs glass droplets. The scrolled branches are also decorated with ormolu foliate scrolls. Every branch is connected to the central column, which is crafted from brown patinated bronze and decorated with opulent ormolu mounts in the form of similar foliate motifs. From the bottom hangs a cut glass finial, and at the top hangs more glass droplets.
The lower tier of the chandelier consists of 12 branches, the middle tier holds 9, and the top supports 6. The glass light shades are engraved with the initials 'S.R.' -
