Description
This Louis Poulsen 'Waggon' wall lamp is a quintessential representation of Danish modern design, characterised by simplicity, functionality, and a distinct minimalist aesthetic. The combination of high-quality materials, encapsulate the era's design principles whilst delivering both form and function.
Louis Poulsen, the renowned Danish lighting manufacturer, has a rich history of producing iconic designs. Founded in 1874, the company has consistently emphasized craftsmanship and innovation. This lamp model embodies the sleek and simple aesthetic of Danish mid century design. The standout feature of the lamp’s appearance is the opal glass shade, a material that was first manufactured by glass blowing houses in 16th century Venice. The rounded shape is very effective in showcasing the juxtaposition of the opal glass and the brass and aluminum mounts - a classic example of the contrast and harmony that Danish design often seeks to achieve. However, the allure of the 'Waggon' lamp lies not only in material or aesthetic appeal, but also in the pragmatic form that allows for versatile illumination. The play of brass, aluminium and opal glass not only adds a touch of opulence, but also ensures durability and longevity.
Keeping in line with the trends of the time, the maker of this lamp abandoned ornamentation in favour of perfecting the form. The warm elegance and the “form follows function” ethos inherent in Danish and Scandinavian design is maintained, as well as an emphasis on high-quality craftsmanship. This sleek wall lamp would make a timeless addition to any interior.
