Description
Maison Arlus, a French lighting design company was founded in the early 20th century by Robert and Jean Arlus. The company quickly gained recognition for its innovative and stylish lighting fixtures, which were characterised by their use of high-quality materials and their focus on functionality. This elegant floor lamp is attributed to the company.
Instead of excessive ornamentation or loud features, French mid-century modern designers favoured quality materials and artistic expressions in their creations. This floor lamp has an interesting structure with unique elements that assure visual points of interest from every angle. With its slender shape and a brass and black lacquered body, this lamp is a great modernist piece that stands out in any space. The ingenious structure allows the direction of light to be adjustable. The positioning of the neck adds a touch of practicality to the lamp's overall aesthetic, making it a versatile piece. The tripod base provides a sturdy and durable foundation, ensuring the lamp stands securely while maintaining its lightness of form, while also reflecting the mid-century modern drive - function over form. Next to the undeniable focus on functionality, aesthetic dimension was evidently considered, most visible in the stylish fabric shade and brass elements. The shade is in a diabolo shape, reminiscent of Pierre Gauriche’s “G20” model. The diabolo shape is especially striking with the light fabric material and the brass holder providing a lovely juxtaposition. Contrasts further define this lamp’s design, be it the black lacquered stem standing out against the brass base and neck and the light lampshade, or the variety of shapes and forms, like the spherical elements shining through the overall straightness of the model.
Unlike other aesthetic movements, mid-century modern design was streamlined, while highlighting the materials used. The vibe of this floor lamp is fresh, artistic, and alluring with its dedication to quality and practicality wrapped up in a design that will never bore.
