Description
This exceptional mid-century modern table lamp perfectly pairs the tailored geometry of post-war European design with the luxurious, highly tactile execution of the French Hollywood Regency movement. The central column features a heavy, hand-blown flint glass urn characterized by an elegant baluster-neck profile treated with a distinct, hand-applied frosted porphyry satin finish. This opaque glass surface acts as an intentional visual screen, cleanly concealing the lamp's internal wiring harness while providing an optimal, non-reflective background for the exterior ornamentation. The graphic scheme consists of an asymmetric botanical composition depicting marshland cattails and stylized fan foliage. The entire design is strictly surface-applied, using a raised ceramic slip paste technique to build up a wire-like armature subsequently gilded in rich gold leaf, framed by hand-brushed white enamel accents and raised, three-dimensional black and white enamel "jeweling."
Design History & Context
Dating precisely to the 1950s, this lamp represents the bench-made output of a premier Parisian decorative lighting atelier, highly characteristic of the mid-century custom catalogs of Maison Le Dauphin (France) or elite contemporary studios operating within the prestigious Maison Charles design tradition. Sourced to continental European proportions, these premium French design houses specialized in modifying heavy glass blanks through intensive manual studio decoration rather than utilizing mass-market mechanical etching.
To date, this specific iteration remains an unrecorded, documented design unicum. Stripping away competing textures, the lamp is paired with a clean, contemporary neutral drum shade. This minimalist approach allows the texturized craquelure of the porphyry ground and the dimensional gold leaf artwork to remain the undivided focal point of the composition. The column is anchored at the base by a neoclassical rope-twist cast-brass collar resting upon a substantial, stepped truncated pyramidal base expertly hand-fabricated from sheet metal (tôlerie) and finished in a smooth matte black lacquer.

Condition Report
Overall Status: Excellent vintage condition. A highly complete, structurally sound mid-century French masterwork.
Glass Urn Body: The heavy-walled glass body features a prominent, hand-chiseled cold vertical mold seam typical of premium mid-century French hand-blown production. The glass matrix is entirely free of fractures, deep scratches, or chips. The hand-applied surface ground, raised gold slip-trailing, and dimensional enamel jewels remain exceptionally secure, showcasing full structural integrity with no notable flaking or material loss.
Hardware & Metal Base: The cast-brass rope-twist collar, neck cap, and internal fittings are entirely tight and securely mounted. The hand-fabricated sheet-metal base is structurally rock-solid with data-verified, crisp, intact hand-soldered internal seams. The exterior matte black finish displays minor micro-abrasions and light edge wear consistent with age. - More Information
