Black Lacquered Metal Floor Lamp by Lunel, France Mid-20th Century

Description
French lighting manufacturer Lunel became known for producing elegant modernist fixtures that balanced sculptural form with functional clarity. Working with designers such as René Mathieu and Pierre Guariche, the company developed lighting that embraced metal structures, adjustable elements, and restrained silhouettes rather than decorative excess. This floor lamp reflects that direction through its minimalist construction and carefully balanced proportions.
The lamp features a slender black lacquered metal stem that rises from a tripod base composed of three thin angled supports. Instead of creating a heavy foundation, the base remains open, allowing the structure to appear light despite its height. The stem bends gently near the top before extending horizontally toward the shade. The shade combines two opposing conical forms joined at a narrow central point, creating an hourglass-like profile that immediately draws attention. Its light pale surface contrasts sharply against the darker metal structure, while the black ring detail at the centre visually ties the shade back to the frame below. The shape directs light downward in a focused manner, making the lamp suitable beside a reading chair or sofa, though the shade also allows a softer ambient glow to escape upward and envelop a space.
The angled stem and suspended shade create a sense of tension and movement that keeps the silhouette of this piece dynamic despite its minimal construction. The composition relies heavily on line and balance rather than material richness or ornament, showing the talented craftsmanship of mid-century design.
