Description
Massive antique French Louis XIV style ormolu chandelier
French, 19th Century
Height 250cm, diameter 160cm
A truly remarkable example of 19th century French craftsmanship, this grand ormolu chandelier is designed in the opulent Louis XIV manner, a style that flourished in the early 18th century and is renowned for its theatricality, symbolism, and grandeur.
The chandelier is composed entirely of gilt bronze and features an elaborate composition of classical and allegorical motifs. Its finely constructed central column is a masterpiece in itself. At the top, a sculpted ribbon, tied with precision, supports a gracefully coiling serpent, an ancient symbol of knowledge and intellect. The serpent carries a laurel garland, from which hang two detailed pinecone finials. Below them, architectural elements cascade into the heart of the piece, leading the eye to a striking trio of putti.
These cherubic figures are positioned with bent knees, backs pressed against the central shaft, and hands gripping a chain that connects to the chandelier's main frame. Their intense expressions convey the imagined weight they bear, symbolising effort, strength, and the majesty of the object above them. Each emblematic figure contributes to the chandelier’s narrative: ribbons for unity, laurel wreaths for honour and glory, and serpents for wisdom.
Sixty candle-style light fittings radiate from the central structure, each resting on curling arms richly wrapped in acanthus foliage. The arms terminate in flower-like drip pans, surmounted by classical bead-and-reel candle cups. Scattered between the arms are additional botanical motifs, reinforcing the design's lush, nature-inspired aesthetic.
Once lit, the chandelier transforms dramatically, its gilded surfaces reflecting a warm, golden light that amplifies the richness of its detailed ornamentation. This piece is not only a spectacular source of illumination but also a celebration of decorative art and symbolism, ideal for any grand interior or refined collection. -
