Description
Monumental Art Deco Theater Chandelier, 1920s – Warfield Theater, San Francisco
This monumental 1920s Art Deco chandelier from the famed Warfield Theater in San Francisco is a rare architectural treasure offered by Art Deco Collection. Designed by celebrated architect G. Albert Lansburgh, who trained at the École des Beaux-Arts, this chandelier embodies the opulence of the grand movie palaces of the Jazz Age. Crafted in polished brass with milk glass and frosted lucite diffuser panels, the chandelier measures over three feet across and features multiple sockets with fresh new wiring for modern use. Its sculptural form, blending decorative artistry with practical brilliance, reflects Lansburgh’s reputation as one of America’s foremost theater architects.
The chandelier’s provenance is tied to the Warfield’s storied interior, known for its marble, gilt, and chandeliers, as well as grand staircases, and a celebrated mural by Albert Herter above the stage proscenium. Opening in 1922, the theater became a landmark of San Francisco nightlife, later transformed into a premier concert venue by Bill Graham Presents in the 1970s, where it hosted Bob Dylan and other iconic performers. Renovations in the 2000s ensured the preservation of its historic charm, and this chandelier stands as a tangible connection to its illustrious past. For collectors of fine Art Deco lighting and architectural design, this piece represents a true statement in both history and artistry. - More Information
