Description
Kähler Keramik was founded in Næstved in 1839 and developed a long tradition of ceramic craftsmanship that continued through four generations of the Kähler family. Nils Kähler (1906–1979) and his brother Herman Jørgen took over the family workshop in 1940, with Nils becoming responsible for its artistic direction. A trained potter, Nils worked extensively with stoneware and created numerous pieces through standout glazing methods during his career.
This table lamp, produced around the mid 20th century, combines Kähler’s skills with the simple forms associated with Danish mid-century design. The lamp has a tall stoneware base with a compact rounded lower section and a long, tapered neck. The lower part is covered in a rich blue glaze, with variations due to the glaze gathering in the pattern visible across the surface. The zig-zag pattern runs around the body, adding texture and enhancing its simple shape. The long neck has a contrasting grey surface with a fine, granular texture, as it is left unglazed. It gradually narrows towards the top, giving the ceramic base a slender and well-balanced profile. The contrast between the glossy blue glaze and the rougher surface of the neck is one of the most striking elements of the design. A wide cylindrical fabric shade completes the lamp, balancing the narrow ceramic body with its broad horizontal shape. When illuminated, the fabric filters the light into a warm glow that complements the blue and earthy tones of the stoneware.
Nils Kähler’s work is particularly associated with stoneware, simple forms and experimentation with glazes, all clearly represented in this lamp. The combination of colour and texture gives it a distinctive appearance while remaining easy to place within an interior. Its compact footprint makes it particularly suitable for a side table, cabinet or console, where the ceramic base can be appreciated as much as the light it provides.
