A Large Paavo Tynell Flush Mount Model 1076 in Brass & Rattan, Idman 1950s

$ 5,540
  • Description
    An atmospheric ceiling lamp designed by Paavo Tynell and manufactured by Idman in Finland during the 1950s. The lamp features a renewed rattan, wood-slatted shade that softens the light beautifully and introduces an organic, tactile presence to the interior. This version was clearly intended to enhance ambience rather than provide direct illumination, making it particularly well suited for living spaces, bedrooms, or dining areas where warmth and mood are essential.
    This lamp also comes with its original shade, which shows visible wear consistent with age and use; please refer to the photos for details, the shade in white. The fixture is stamped Idman, all components are original with the exception of the renewed rattan shade, which has been sensitively executed in keeping with the spirit of the original design. Both shades will be inclyded in the sale.

    Paavo Tynell (1890–1973) is widely regarded as the most important lighting designer in Finnish history and is often referred to as the man who “illuminated Finland.” His lighting fixtures are celebrated for their poetic use of light, refined craftsmanship, and organic detailing. Tynell’s work can be found in many significant public buildings, including the Finnish Parliament House and the office of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in New York.

    Trained originally as a sheet metal worker, Tynell later studied and taught at the Central School of Applied Arts in Helsinki. In 1918, he co-founded Taito Oy, which would later become one of Finland’s most important lighting manufacturers as electrification spread through the country. By the post-war period, Tynell had developed the distinctive style for which he is best known today, particularly during the late 1940s and 1950s, when his designs were produced for both the Finnish and American markets and sold through Finland House in New York.

    Although initially met with some criticism in Finland, these designs soon became highly sought after internationally. Today, Paavo Tynell’s lighting fixtures are considered icons of 20th-century design and are held in major collections worldwide, with rare examples achieving exceptional prices at auction.
