Early Paavo Tynell Pendant 1373 in Brass, Birch & Opaline Glass, Taito 1930s

A beautiful early example of Paavo Tynell’s 1930s lighting design, model 1373/5. A decorative piece with a dark stained birch ball in the center, five gracefully curved cast brass arms and blown glass shades. The shades are light beige, delicate and astonishingly beautiful, especially when illuminated. The stem is wrapped with string, a detail typical of the 1930s.

The lamp is stamped Oy Taito Ab and marked model no. 1373. It remains in its original condition with all authentic parts preserved. A striking and versatile piece that complements modern, eclectic as well as classical interiors.

Paavo Tynell (1890–1973) was a pioneering Finnish designer often referred to as “the man who illuminated Finland.” He began his career as a metalworker and later co-founded Taito Oy in 1918, the company that became synonymous with Finnish lighting design. Tynell’s work ranged from early functionalist designs to the poetic, nature-inspired creations of the post-war years. His lamps were featured in major projects such as the Finnish Parliament House and Alvar Aalto’s Paimio Sanatorium, and later gained international acclaim through Finland House in New York. Today, his lighting pieces are considered icons of Scandinavian modernism and are among the most sought-after works of 20th-century design.
