Paavo Tynell Adjustable Ceiling Lamp Model 1968 in Rattan, Taito 1940s

A beautiful adjustable ceiling lamp by Paavo Tynell, harmoniously combining patinated brass with warm rattan and a fabric-lined shade. The elegant counterweight mechanism showcases Tynell’s ingenuity, allowing the lamp height to be adjusted effortlessly to suit varying ceiling heights and interiors. The lamp retains all original parts and remains in excellent vintage condition except for the renewed rattan shade. The brass and inner metal parts have been left untouched. Stamped “Oy Taito Ab” and model number.

The wooden detail introduces an organic warmth that complements a wide range of interiors, from cottages and rustic spaces to eclectic and modern homes alike. The rattan shade has been professionally renewed.

Rattan shades were especially popular during the 1940s and 1950s for the atmospheric light they produce, softly filtering illumination through the woven surface to create a romantic ambiance. Shades of this type were influenced by wartime material shortages during the 1940s, when fabric availability was limited.

The lamp has been rewired with a fabric covered cord similar to the ones used in the period. This one however is up to date and earthed.

Paavo Tynell (1890–1973) was one of Finland’s most celebrated lighting designers, renowned for his elegant brass fixtures and refined craftsmanship. As co-founder of Taito Oy, he helped define Scandinavian lighting design in the mid-20th century, and his works today remain highly sought after by collectors worldwide.
