Description
A beautiful and refined example of the model 9460 wall light by Paavo Tynell, produced by Idman in Finland during the 1950s. Executed entirely in brass, the fixture embodies Tynell’s unmistakable balance of elegance and function. The design is composed of a slender wall bracket supporting two light sources, concealed behind a gently curved perforated brass reflector. The pierced surface softens and diffuses the light while simultaneously casting a warm glow both upwards and downwards along the wall, creating a calm and atmospheric illumination.
The simplicity of the form, paired with the delicate perforation, gives the piece a sculptural presence while remaining light and understated. It works effortlessly across interiors, from restrained modern settings to more layered and eclectic spaces.
The lamp has been professionally polished and lacquered, with wiring updated to modern standards, while retaining all original components. Stamped Idman. At the moment we have another similar one manufactured by Taito also listed in 1stdibs. They can suit as a pair in case you are looking for a pair of Paavo Tynell wall lights. Please see photos of them together.
Paavo Tynell (1890–1973) was a pioneering Finnish lighting designer and co-founder of Taito Oy, and widely regarded as one of the leading figures of Scandinavian modern design. Known for his refined use of brass and his signature perforated detailing, Tynell approached lighting as both a technical and decorative art. His work is distinguished by its warmth, craftsmanship, and quiet elegance, and remains among the most sought-after of the Nordic mid-century period. -
