Description
A beautiful and exceptionally rare example of Paavo Tynell’s early functionalist lighting from the 1930s, this pendant embodies a quiet yet striking sense of balance and restraint. The composition is defined by four elongated opaline glass shades, suspended in a symmetrical arrangement from a refined brass structure. The design is pared down to its essentials, allowing proportion, material, and subtle detailing to take precedence, resulting in a piece that feels both architectural and softly luminous.
The long drop, extending over one meter, gives the fixture a commanding presence while maintaining an elegant lightness, making it particularly well suited for entryways, stairwells, or living spaces where verticality can be appreciated. The brass has developed a rich and nuanced patina over time, lending warmth and depth that contrasts beautifully with the clean, matte glow of the white glass shades. One of the shades is of a later date and presents a very slight variation in tone, unnoticeable especially while illuminated. (the difference is extremely subtle and only became apparent upon close inspection during cleaning).
The lamp remains in otherwise original condition, preserving the integrity of Tynell’s design and craftsmanship.
Encounters with this model are exceedingly rare, and its scarcity underscores the breadth and originality of Tynell’s output, where even within a seemingly minimal vocabulary, he achieved remarkable diversity and refinement.
Paavo Tynell, often referred to as the man who “illuminated Finland,” was a central figure in the development of Finnish lighting design and a co-founder of Taito Oy. His work is distinguished by a unique ability to merge functionalist principles with a delicate decorative sensibility, and his fixtures were installed in both prominent public buildings and refined private interiors. Today, his designs are highly sought after by collectors worldwide, celebrated for their enduring elegance and masterful use of light. - More Information
