Paavo Tynell Brass & Opal Glass Ceiling Pendant Model K2-20, Idman 1950s

$ 11,570
  • Description
    A beautiful ceiling pendant model K2-20, designed by Paavo Tynell and manufactured by Idman in Finland in the 1950s.

    The lamp combines a softly glowing opal-glass diffuser with a broad brass shade, delicately perforated to allow small points of light to shine through. The sculptural brass crown above the glass adds one of Tynell’s characteristic decorative details, balancing the otherwise simple and functional form.

    Most remarkable is the lamp’s exceptionally rich original patina. Developed naturally over decades, the surface displays layered tones of brown, gold, green and dark bronze, creating an almost painterly composition. Rather than merely showing age, the patina has transformed the brass shade into something resembling a work of abstract art. Every variation, mark and trace of oxidation contributes to the lamp’s unique character and history.

    The pendant remains in its original condition, and its beautifully aged surface has intentionally been preserved. It is stamped by the manufacturer.

    With its balanced proportions and warm, atmospheric light, the K2-20 is remarkably versatile. It would work beautifully above a dining table, in a living room, bedroom or entrance hall, complementing both contemporary and traditional interiors.

    Paavo Tynell (1890–1973) was one of Finland’s most celebrated lighting designers and is often described as the man who “illuminated Finland.” A trained metalsmith and co-founder of Taito Oy in 1918, he created lighting for numerous important public buildings, including the Finnish Parliament House and the office of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in New York. Tynell’s distinctive combination of refined metalwork, poetic ornamentation and softly filtered light brought him international recognition, particularly through Finland House in New York. Today, his lamps are among the most sought-after examples of twentieth-century Finnish design.
