Description
A refined Scandinavian Modern ceiling lamp designed by Paavo Tynell and manufactured by Taito in Finland during the late 1940s early 1950s. The lamp features a large, softly rounded glass shade with a beige tone measuring approximately 50 cm in diameter, suspended from a slender brass stem with a total drop of just under one meter. The design is minimal and quietly elegant, relying on proportion, material, and balance rather than ornament. Nothing is added, nothing is missing.
The generous glass diffuser provides a gentle, even light, making the lamp ideal for larger rooms or spaces with higher ceilings. Its restrained expression allows it to sit comfortably in both modern and classic interiors, offering presence without excess.
The lamp remains in very good original condition with a beautiful, naturally aged patina to the brass. The glass shade is well preserved. At present, we have a matching example available and listed separately for those seeking a pair.
Paavo Tynell (1890–1973) was one of the most influential figures in Finnish lighting design. Trained as a metalworker, he co-founded Oy Taito in 1918, which became Finland’s leading lighting manufacturer. His work is known for its refinement, warmth, and masterful handling of metal and light. Through collaborations with architects and international exhibitions, Tynell’s designs gained wide recognition, particularly in Finland and the United States, where his lamps were sold through Finland House in New York. -
