Per Linnemann-Schmidt Model "SL4" Table Lamp, Denmark Mid-20th Century

$ 3,325
  • Description
    Danish sculptor and ceramic artist Per Linnemann-Schmidt was born in Copenhagen in 1912. He inherited his artistic lineage from his father, the renowned Danish sculptor Willie Wulff (1881-1962). Linnemann-Schmidt embarked on his artistic journey in 1931, enrolling at the Royal Academy of Art in Copenhagen, where he honed his expertise in life and figure drawing, as well as sculpting in clay, plaster, and bronze. In 1949, Per established Palshus Stentøj (Stoneware) in Sengeløse, and this was where he developed this beautiful model “SL4” table lamp.

    The model “SL4” stands as a testament to the quality and craftsmanship of Danish design during the mid-20th century. Its clean lines and classic form are characteristic of the period, combining minimalist sophistication with rich materials to create a lamp that feels both contemporary and timeless. The overall design has a clear focus on the ceramic body. The piece features a beautiful glaze in a brown colour over a stoneware body. The design is further elevated by its fabric shade, which provides a soft, diffused light that enhances the ambiance of any room. The contrast between the dark body and the light, airy shade creates a harmonious balance, emphasizing the lamp's sculptural qualities while still ensuring its functionality. The shade's simple, clean lines also reinforces the artistic manner of Per Linnemann-Schmidt's work. This piece not only serves as a functional source of light but also as a sculptural element in a room, embodying the Danish design principles of form, function, and beauty.

    As a whole, the lamp represents the strengths of Danish mid-century design, where simplicity was a way of allowing material, form, and light to shine. Linnemann-Schmidt’s work sits within this tradition, with pieces such as this table lamp carrying his legacy.
