Description
Floor lamp in white-enameled brass, model Luminator, produced by FontanaArte, designed by Pietro Chiesa, Italy, original from the 1930s
This lamp, with its slender and sinuous lines, is one of Pietro Chiesa’s earliest designs. At the time, Chiesa was a young designer but already a well-established name in the artistic glass industry. Perhaps among the first lamps conceived for indirect light diffusion, it represents a pivotal moment in design history. Created in the early 1930s, the concept of a lamp characterized simply by a cone that conceals the light source, seamlessly mounted on a base, is a clear aesthetic statement. Its form reflects the refined and unconventional artistic exploration of the period, balancing abstraction and metaphysics.
There is something reminiscent of Giorgio de Chirico’s chimneys in this lamp, evoking the image of a room overlooking a geometric colonnade, attempting to illuminate the enigma of a day with long shadows, as depicted in some of the Italian painter’s works. Even the name chosen for this object, Luminator, is highly evocative, emphasizing the sophistication of a historic design piece that transcends furniture to enter the realm of cultured collecting. The lamp, entirely original from the period, is offered in working order and excellent condition, with only the expected signs of age to report.
